Broadcast media advertising today: Reaching audiences across TV, radio and digital

by | Jan 22, 2026

At MEERKATworks, over two decades of experience in media planning and buying have shown that broadcast advertising remains one of the most powerful ways to reach and influence audiences. From prime-time TV advertising slots to regional radio campaigns and the growing popularity of podcasts, broadcast channels give businesses the ability to connect with customers at scale.

What is broadcast advertising?

Broadcast advertising is the placement of promotional messages across mass media channels such as television, radio and podcasts. Traditionally, it was all about TV and radio. But today, broadcasting also covers digital platforms where content is streamed, downloaded or delivered live to a broad audience.

The core idea hasn’t changed: one message, broadcast to many. However, advances in technology mean that broadcast ads can now be more targeted, measurable and cost-effective than ever before.

MEERKATworks - audio and podcast advertising

Is broadcast advertising still relevant today?

It’s a resounding “yes” from the MEERKATs. Despite, and partially due to, the rise of digital, broadcast channels still play a crucial role in brand building and sales activation. A well-placed TV or radio ad can reach millions in minutes, create shared cultural moments and water cooler discussions, as well as driving immediate action.

For SMEs and challenger brands, broadcast offers much more than visibility:

Scale and reach – Broadcast platforms deliver your message to audiences of all sizes, whether you’re aiming nationally or locally. A single ITV advertising spot during a popular programme can reach millions, while a regional radio campaign can quickly spread awareness across your local market. For brands with limited budgets, this scale is invaluable.

Trust and credibility – Audiences tend to view broadcast advertising as more trustworthy than purely digital formats. Appearing alongside respected broadcasters such as ITV, the BBC or established radio networks gives your brand a halo effect. There’s also an added layer of reassurance behind the scenes: TV commercials are cleared through Clearcast, and radio ads are vetted via the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB) process, helping ensure broadcast campaigns meet recognised standards before they go live. For SMEs and challenger brands, it’s an extra layer of credibility that’s hard to replicate in some social environments.

Flexibility across channels – You’ll be pleased to hear that broadcast doesn’t have to mean expensive national TV campaigns. Options include regional TV buying, highly targeted addressable TV, local radio advertising or podcast sponsorships. This flexibility makes broadcast accessible to businesses of different sizes and budgets, allowing them to target specific demographics, geographical areas or interest groups with precision.

Integration with digital – The most effective campaigns don’t rely on one channel alone. The MEERKATs are known for taking a holistic approach to media planning and buying, and for successfully interweaving different media across a campaign. In this way, we have found, time and again, that broadcast often works best when combined with digital. This integration maximises frequency, reinforces key messages and provides a consistent brand experience across multiple touchpoints.

At MEERKATworks, we’ve seen first-hand how broadcast advertising can transform awareness and drive results for businesses of all sizes. Here are a few ways we have helped clients bring broadcast to life:

Multi-platform campaign for KSS

The MEERKATs planned and bought a highly successful six-month-long multi-platform advertising campaign to raise awareness of KSS, the vital air ambulance charity in Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

The planning of the campaign ensured good frequency and precise impact across Linear TV, VoD, Digital Audio, Programmatic and OOH. The campaign video featured bespoke music, written and produced by MEERKATworks, to reflect the KSS brand in a unique way. The video was broadcast across ITV linear and ITV Hub within the geo-targeted area to achieve targeted coverage across all three counties.

Throughout the planning, production and execution of this advertising campaign, the MEERKATs were able to draw on their extensive broadcast media experience and creative prowess to build brand awareness and a greater understanding of the critical care provided by the charity.

Digital audio campaign for Explore Minnesota

The MEERKATS created, planned and bought a ‘Postcards from Minnesota’ digital audio campaign for Explore Minnesota.

The broadcast campaign featured creative written and produced by MEERKAT audio expert, Dan. He developed three ‘audio postcards’ which brought to life the variety of inspiring places to explore in Minnesota: from the legendary Mississippi, to viewing the Northern Lights and Dark Sky Sanctuary at Voyageurs National Park.

The impressive precision of digital audio enabled us to target and reach listeners in Greater London, within the ‘Travel’ audience segments of both DAX and Bauer DA.

Willen Lake’s connected TV campaign

MEERKATworks delivered a strategically targeted connected TV campaign – alongside Video on Demand (VoD) and traditional Sky TV – for Willen Lake, the park and visitor attraction in Milton Keynes. The campaign was designed to reach families in their homes across a range of viewing platforms.

The choice of Connected TV – which includes content streamed via internet-enabled devices – allowed for precise audience targeting and acted as a powerful tool for the MEERKATs to engage viewers in relevant and measurable ways. The campaign was geo-targeted to households in the surrounding catchment area, so ensuring the creative reached those most likely to visit the popular outdoor destination.

Whether parents were enjoying family films in the living room or children were streaming shows on personal devices, the MEERKATs’ careful planning ensured Willen Lake was front and centre in their minds.

Effective broadcast advertising copy

Great broadcast ads start with impactful messaging. Broadcast spots are generally short, sharp and often compete with a listener or viewer’s divided attention. That’s why broadcast advertising copy needs to work harder to make an immediate impact. Here are the essentials:

Grab attention quickly

Most broadcast ads last less than a minute, and while 30 seconds remains the traditional standard, advertisers choose lengths depending on their budget, the story they need to tell, and the specific audience they want to reach, with a trend towards shorter formats down to 6 seconds in digital spaces. This means you may only have a few seconds to capture attention before your audience tunes out. Strong openings matter – this could be a leading question, a bold statement or even a recognisable sound or jingle. Think about how you can stand out immediately while staying relevant to your brand.

Speak directly to your audience

Knowing who you’re talking to is key. A podcast sponsorship aimed at business decision-makers will sound very different to a radio ad targeting families during the school run. Tailoring tone, language and even music choices to your target audience helps your ad feel more personal and relatable. This is where the MEERKATs’ expert media planning comes into play, ensuring your message lands with the right people, at just the right time.

Keep it simple and memorable

The most effective broadcast ads don’t try to say everything at once. Instead, they deliver one clear message in a way that sticks. Whether that’s highlighting a unique selling point, introducing a new offer or reinforcing brand recognition, clarity is everything. Simple, repeated messaging paired with memorable audio or visuals helps audiences recall your brand long after the ad has ended.

Include a clear call to action

Broadcast ads are powerful for brand-building, but they should also guide audiences on what to do next. This could be visiting a website, scanning a QR code in a TV spot or remembering a catchy URL mentioned in a radio ad. The best CTAs are straightforward, easy to recall and leave no doubt about the next step.

When strong copywriting is paired with smart media buying, broadcast ads can deliver both instant impact and long-term brand value.

How businesses use broadcast advertising

Television advertising

TV remains the flagship of broadcast media. It delivers scale, prestige and the opportunity to tell a story visually. Options range from national campaigns to more affordable regional TV buying. Increasingly, addressable TV allows advertisers to target households with greater precision, combining the impact of TV with the measurability of digital.

Radio advertising

Radio offers flexibility, scale, affordability and strong engagement. It’s perfect for building frequency and keeping your brand top of mind.

Podcast advertising

Podcasts are now a key part of the broadcast mix, particularly for brands targeting more niche audiences. They combine the intimacy of audio with the credibility of trusted hosts.

The role of media planning and buying

Effective broadcast advertising isn’t just about making a great ad – it’s about getting it in front of the right people at the right time. That’s where media planning and a trusted media buying agency come in.
