How Out-Of-Home (OOH) helps schools, colleges and universities win attention
If you work in education marketing, you’ll know the hardest part isn’t creating interest, it’s cutting through the noise at the exact moments that matter. At MEERKATworks we have over 20 years’ experience in planning and buying education advertising campaigns, and we understand the importance of brand visibility and impact at those precise times when a parent is deciding which open day to attend, when a student is narrowing their shortlist or when Clearing turns into a high-speed, high-stakes week of decision-making.
That’s why out-of-home (OOH) remains such a powerful lever in the UK for education advertising. It gives your message physical presence in the real world, on commutes, in town centres, near sixth forms and around campuses.

Education advertising needs “real-world” visibility
Education is a considered purchase; often one of the biggest decisions a person (or family) will make. Your audience is rarely just one person. Prospective students talk to, and seek advice from, parents, carers, teachers, friends and peers. That’s why advertising in higher education often has two overlapping jobs: to persuade the student and reassure the influencer.
OOH helps because it builds familiarity before someone ever searches. It makes your institution feel established, present and relevant. And when digital demand spikes – open day sign-ups, course page traffic, Clearing calls – OOH can be the reason your brand is already in the running.
OOH and education advertising
OOH is a multi-faceted and diverse category of advertising which stretches from traditional static billboards to highly targeted, programmatic digital screens.
For education brands, the most effective campaigns tend to combine formats that match students’, and their families’, movement patterns:
- Rail and tube environments that catch commuters and day trippers.
- Roadside formats like bus stops, 6-sheets and larger format 48 sheets that reach households and “influencers” in daily routines.
- Bus and train interiors that deliver repeated exposure on the same journey.
- In-school and near-campus placements that hit the moment of decision.
When people search for education billboards, they’re usually picturing a single, big statement. In reality, the magic is often in the mix: placing the right creative, in the right format, at the right touchpoints—so your message repeats naturally across someone’s week.

Campaign example: University Open Days, planned for real student journeys
Open days are a classic example of education marketing where timing and location do the heavy lifting. For the University of Sussex open day campaign, MEERKATworks planned and bought a tailored OOH campaign designed to raise awareness of open days and drive attendance.
What made it work wasn’t a single “hero” placement; it was meeting prospective students as they travelled, studied and socialised. The plan combined rail 4-sheets at busy stations, bus passenger panels, in-school posters, train car panels and underground 4-sheets, creating both reach and repetition across the places students and families already pass through.
Campaign example: Proximity-based planning (and why catchments matter)
In education advertising, “location” isn’t just geography, it’s intent. Proximity-based planning is about being close to decision-making moments and the communities that feed your admissions funnel.
In MEERKATworks’ proximity-based OOH strategy for the University of Sussex, in-school panels were positioned in targeted feeder schools to reach Year 12 students as they started weighing up options. Alongside this roadside 6-sheets were planned in key areas to reach both prospective students and their influencers when they’re out and about.
To extend reach beyond the immediate area, the campaign also included train card panels on key lines across London and the South-East, plus cinema, London Underground 4-sheets, and OOH at key rail stations.
This is a great example of higher education advertising that’s built around behaviour, not guesswork: start close to the most relevant audiences, then scale out along the routes they travel.
Campaign example: Clearing, when speed matters and audiences widen
Clearing is a different beast. Students are moving fast, options can change quickly and the audience broadens to include parents and carers more than ever. In MEERKATworks’ University of Sussex Clearing campaign, the media mix combined OOH with digital audio and ITV Pause Ads to reach both young listeners and an older “influencer” demographic.
The audio ran across Global’s DAX network and the Bauer Digital Audio ‘audioXI’ portfolio and used geo-targeting down to postcode level to focus on precisely the right areas.
Clearing campaigns work best when they don’t rely on one channel to do everything. OOH builds the confidence and recognition; audio and CTV help you stay present in the home and on the move, and digital captures the final conversion.

How to plan education billboards and OOH with purpose
If you’re considering a media buying partner for education advertising, this is what we’d help you lock down early:
First, define the decision you’re trying to influence. Is it open day attendance, applications, postgraduate enquiries, Clearing calls or awareness for a new course area?
Next, map the audience and the influencers. For school leavers, that might mean sixth forms and colleges, plus family travel routes. For postgrads, it might mean commuter corridors and city centres. For international recruitment, it could be airport routes, cultural hubs and brand-building environments that signal credibility.
Then, choose formats that fit the moment. In-school panels can hit early consideration. Rail and underground can build repeated recall. Roadside can capture influencers and households. Digital OOH can add flexibility when dates and messaging need to move quickly.
Finally, keep the creative clear and human. Students don’t want corporate fluff. Parents don’t want vague promises. A single, confident message, supported by a clear next step, usually outperforms a busy, cluttered “prospectus on a poster”.

The value of education advertising
If you’re planning education billboards for open days, scaling higher education advertising for recruitment cycles, sharpening student advertising around Clearing or building smarter campus advertising to support your funnel and brand, OOH gives you a consistent, credible presence that supports the full decision journey.
